Arugam Bay is where most of the surfing action takes place in Sri Lanka. Surfers flock to the area during the high season between April to October to catch the waves. It will be worth your while to book one of Arugam Bay’s villas. Arugam Bay is ideal for intermediate surfers. If you are visiting the island between November to May, beaches in the south such as Mirissa, Weligama, Midigama, Ahangama, Kabalana, Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa provide more tame waves that beginners can use.
TIP: For surf holidays on the West Coast, book your stay at Monara House, Talpe
Jet Skiing is pretty much like riding a motorbike on water and it’s super fun. You can get drenched from top to toe as you navigate the Jet Ski across the water with skips, air-water jumps, and cruise along the sea or a freshwater lake. Bentota in south of Sri Lanka is famous for jet skiing. They have a river and the ocean is not too far away. Negombo lagoon and the serene waters of Passikudah beach, as well as the chilly waters of the Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya too, provide jet skiers ample space to play.
Snorkeling and Scuba diving
If you visit Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna in the south or Kalpitiya and Trincomalee (near Pigeon Island) in the east of Sri Lanka, gear up and dive into the turquoise depths to have a bit of a rendezvous with sea creatures. You will easily find a few places around the coast that rents snorkeling and scuba diving gear along with the services of guides. Apart from vibrant sea life and corals, you can even ask your guide to take you to see a sunken ship or two.
