About Thalpe beach and how to get there

Thalpe beach is not as well-known as Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa or even Mirissa but it is one of the most beautiful and serene beaches in Sri Lanka. There aren’t many luxury hotels in Thalpe but it offers some of the most appealing villas in Sri Lanka.  It is merely a 10 minute drive away from Galle town. If you are travelling from Colombo, hire a cab to take you there using the expressway or take a slow train that stops at the Thalpe railway station and take a Tuk Tuk. If you take a cab or decide to drive there, it will take about an hour and a half to get there from Colombo. A train ride from Colombo to Thalpe will take the good part of three hours.

Thalpe Beach aka Wijaya Beach

Thalpe has managed to land itself onto the unofficial instagram map for tourists thanks to the popular beach bar known as Wijaya. This beach is one of the most popular beaches near Galle because of its natural lagoon which provides a safe area to swim year round. It’s also home to a number of sea turtles who visit the reef for a nibble and to say hello to tourists and locals who are enjoying the beach.

What to do in Thalpe

Thalpe is a relatively uncrowded beach and most villas in the area come with private beaches. If you visit Thalpe during the off season, you could pretty much have the entire beach to yourself. What bliss. The sea is calm and safe for sea bathing throughout the year. In short, it is perfect for a family beach vacation. You could spend your days lounging about the beach and going for swims.

Sightseeing in Thalpe and surrounds

You could dine on fresh seafood and vegetables sourced locally.
