Where to Eat in Galle
Galle is a picture perfect coastal town. Usually travellers like to spend a few weeks at one of the famous Galle villas in Sri Lanka to savour all its delights. Here are some of the best restaurants and places to eat in town.
The Fish Market and a Cook a Local Meal
Fishing is an important part of Galle as you can tell by the sight of fishermen and women selling their fresh wares by the beach. When you are in Galle, don’t skip visiting the fish market that is located close to the Galle Fort entrance. The Fort is incidentally close by to a number of sought after villas in Sri Lanka. You could buy some fresh fish and take the lot to a private cooking class hosted by a local. It does not get better than cooking your own Sri Lankan meal with fresh seafood and vegetables bought from the market.
Spoons
Spoons serve up fusion Sri Lankan and western food. You may however have to wait your turn at the restaurant as it is rather compact with just four tables. The food there is flavourful and a little spicy.Try their shrimp wrap and for dessert order ‘Wattalampam’, a sweet and a rich treat made with jiggery (natural sugar extracted from coconut sap), eggs and creamy coconut milk.

Fortazela
The big courtyard and chic interior at Fortazela invite guests to linger over their food and wine. Yes, they serve alcohol. The restaurant is known for their fresh seafood dishes, locally sourced ingeredients and modern twists on traditional Sri Lankan food. Try their seared tuna with a peppery crust made out of ‘pepper and goraka paste’. Goraka pulp is made with dried ‘Malabar tamarind’ and adds a well-balanced sourness to any dish. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and you can even grab a snack or simply enjoy a cocktail at the restaurant.
